This movie was slow in parts and not as formulaic as American horror movies. The story line was not that compelling but there were some good suspense/scare moments. Overall, however, I was not that impressed. I think this film had the capacity to tell an emotional story (the old lady and her story) and could have given the characters and their roles more meaning by doing so. Just ok. Effects were low budget and what little gore there was did not add in any way to the story.

For those who want to know the song it's "Rinne" by Aina Ougi. This was a very good scare/creepy film. I watched it at night because I wanted a good scare :)

You can tell it was made from the makers of the Grudge. It gives that creepy feeling. The one that makes you not wanna go in the dark after you watch it. This move is again a MUST SEE. Overall this movie has a great story, characters, and plot, and more than a couple of great scares.

this was the first film i saw out of the after dark horrorfest and therefore had high hopes for the rest of the series (which was unfounded, i later found out, as the rest of the series is of questionable quality). i loved the atmospheric quality of this film. i am a huge fan of japanese horror, and shimizu did not disappoint with this entry into the genre. there were a few areas of the film that i found mildly confusing, but it wasn't distracting enough to make the movie any less enjoyable. this is most definitely worth watching.

Ok, since it seems like the people writing the reviews are the same people marketing this dud I feel like I should weigh in (seriously...did these people even watch this movie? I am sure my comment will get downvoted to oblivion but its the truth). It has a lot of issues...terrible pacing, tone deaf music and highly god awful execution all around on the script and premise. It also loses a lot of points for flogging you over the head with "scares." Most horror movies ease into things to get you freaked out slowly, here they do a cannonball directly into the deep end and stay there with the throttle stuck at full speed resulting in something that is mostly goofy and completely predictable. It's not scary if it isn't a surprise...this movie has you expecting it 100% of the time so it fails pretty hard all around. It's a pretty whacky movie I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. If you want to see good j-horror I recommend the japanese version of "The Eye" as being at least somewhat decent.

SPOILER ALERT! It didn't quite get to me like some other Japanese horror movies. My personal favorite is Dark Water. I think it was a little too slow in it's pace, and there was too many special effects for a Japanese horror movie - in my opinion. at about 1:20 it turned out to be a zombie movie. Not that I don't like zombie movies, it's just not what I expect from japanese horror. It had it's moments, but as a hardcore horror fan, I wasn't at the tip of my seat at any time.
