Description

Geoffrey Rush stars in this stylish art world thriller as Virgil Oldman, managing director of a leading auction house. A man with his own individual style, he regularly dyes his hair, never goes out without his finest leather gloves and tries to reveal as little as possible of his emotional world. Over the years, he has collected hundreds of masterful, priceless portraits of women that he keeps hidden in his villa. One day, Oldman receives a special assignment: a mysterious young woman, who refuses to appear in person, asks him to sell her family’s antiques. Not only interested in her classical paintings and furniture, Oldman becomes increasingly fascinated by the mysterious incognito woman, who will only communicate with him from behind thick walls and heavy doors. Directed by Academy Award winner Giuseppe Tornatore (Cinema Paradiso), this sumptuous and entertaining mystery of passions, neuroses and intrigue twists and turns through Vienna, Prague, Bolzano and Merano. Starring Geoffrey Rush in a superb performance, The Best Offer also features Jim Sturgess and Donald Sutherland.

This film was very intriguing until I realized they were scamming the old man. I found that upsetting.

Art is not determined by how an artist holds the brush, rather, what is envisioned even before choosing the canvas. The vision was minimalistic yet widened as the movie progressed. Character development, relationships, as well as the plot's twist. In the end, the canvas reflected a fine work of art. You have to see it to believe it!

This movie was one of the best I have seen in a long time. I thought it was fantastic! I had not a clue what would happen next. It left me speechless.

It is a great piece with a nice plot. The part where the paintings were gone was so shocking
  • Too similar to Hitchcock’s “Vertigo".

Tornatore try to deceive us as in the same way as other of his previous films (I am thinking of "Cinema Paradiso", for instance). The cover is amazing: art, beauty, the passing of time, etc. But the problem with this stylish thriller-drama is its “cinéphilie”: it is too heavily influenced by Hitchcock, and especially his masterpiece “Vertigo” . Rush is awesome in his role –as quite always–, the girl is not as astonishing, but the best part for me, besides Rush’s, was Jim Sturgess. It is a well-made film to spend some good time… and then forget.

Any movie starring Geoffrey Rush is worth a look, but this one is littered with Euro art movie cliches, preposterous characters and situations, and a "mysterious" heroine who's so very annoying it's impossible to see why Rush's character finds her so alluring. You'll figure out the big plot twist (and groan at the ludicrous plot holes) long before Rush's supposedly smart character does. Mediocrity masquerading as cleverness. An exasperating fail.

Seriously amazing movie I absolutely love it, it had art that you can possible imagine, tragic love story, and when you think you understand the whole movie you are sadly mistaken and it has some scenes in there but in my opinion it's pretty much a clean movie in my opinion

What a surprisingly good movie that flew under the radar. I was entranced from the start til the end. The ending was not quite what I was expecting, and would have wished for a better more elaborate closing. Worth every dollar I paid to rent this.
