Well, the costumes and (some of) the acting were well done, which are the only two good things I can say about it. The writing was plain stupid -- that bad. A low-budget production with recycled, unconvincing sets for what were supposed to be troop ships, and beach landing scenes that did not include a single landing craft.
  • Director's Cut Better

I like war movies. This one has promise, it's a bit unique in how the director unfolds the story. The characters are cliched (usual line up of oddballs) but some of the scenes are worth seeing. The Director's cut contained scenes that deepened and added to the story. The action takes place at the squad level so if you are looking for wide sweeping battle scenes you are likely going to find this a bit boring. Recommended for hard core war movie aficionados who can tolerate a bit of an offbeat style in return for a few memorable set pieces.
  • Just a classic

This is a really good movie about WW II. The ultimate case is made that war is costly on so many levels! This film is from the point of view of the infantry man fighting for his country, but truly fighting for the lives of his friends and his own. This was a movie of my youth and will always remind me about the true cost of war.
