Description

When a freak accident wipes out an entire royal family, an exhaustive search reveals a distant relation: Ralph Jones (Goodman), a good-natured, down-to-earth Las Vegas entertainer. Immediately, the rude and crude Ralph is given a crash course in royal manners by his new private secretary, the very proper Lord Willingham (Peter O'Toole). But while Ralph's uncouth behavior delights the public, it fuels a fiendish plot by the evil Lord Graves (John Hurt), who's out to oust the new ruler. Now, it's up to this lowborn lounge singer to redeem himself in a manner befitting a king in this warmhearted comedy romp.

A great laugh and movie for all ages. John Goodman is great as a bumbling American forced into accepting the throne of England when he is clearly not prepared for it, nor is England for that matter. As hard as he might try he keeps messing things up and the person who wants to replace him and see's it as his birthright once stolen, uses underhanded tactics meant to not only embarass him, but those around him. Yet Ralph comes through and in the end you may even get a tear or two for the way he handles himself and shows maybe he was the right choice for Monarch. John Goodman rocks the house with an outstanding rendition of Good Golly Miss Molly, which he actually sings himself as well as the Dule of Earl in the closing scenes. Do not miss his rendition of either but especially the Duke of Earl. You will be amazed how well he hits the high notes. Peter O'Toole is his normal outstanding self as Ralphs Royal Secretary, and ultimately a close confidante and friend of Ralphs. In fact the movie shows just how good, and funny by the way, he is.The rest of the supporting cast is excellent and the story line itself funny throughout the entire movie. With a serious yet comedic scene of two along the way. This is one of those movies that some stodgy and uptight critic might not like, but when you're done, you'll wonder why you never watched it before.
