  • Walsh + Lupino = Terrific Flick

Walsh directed Cagney in Cagney's best move (WHITE HEAT), and here he directs Ida Lupino in her best movie. FYI: (1) Lupino was a great director herself, (2) in the 2 films just mentioned Cagney and Lupino play deranged murderers. THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT starts off too slow by today's standards, but halfway through slowly builds to deliver an extremely dramatic punch. Worth owning because it merits multiple viewings.
  • Good for $14 - GREAT for $3

I don't know why this movie doesn't get any of those tomato ratings (which can be way off) but it might be because it's not that popular of a movie - I'm a Bogey Fan but never heard of this one (I think because Bogey is not the star). You could not go wrong buying this movie but renting this movie for $3 is worth it times 5. The dialogue and script are amazing - not Casablanca-like but the same kind of flow. Though not of the magnitude of Casablanca this is one of those movies that might have been a throwaway at the time but you wish they knew how to write now. A Time Capsule. If you're looking for a quick fun whisk-away this movie is it!
