This movies shows its 32 years (came out in 1982) - it's extremely slow, overacted, and off-putting.

This film has left an indelible impression on me. Superb sets, Superb script, Superb acting. Jessica Lange is a complete revelation of scalding emotional purportions. There hasnt been such a full bodied performance in recent memory that could match her insightful portrayal of the enigmatic and independant Frances Farmer. The other actors that are in this film all give stunning performances that highlight the shocking circumstance that follow...Be prepared... The film is depressing and refuses to gothe way of a typical Hollywood happy ending. The film is a raw, unflinching look at how women were percieved and treated in a time of severe oppression and non existant self expression. The last 10 minuts of the movie will stay with you for weeks to come. This film is in my personal top 15 favorites of all time. The film and Jessica Lange has moved me like no other.

Jessica Lange is outstanding, playing the outspoken Frances Farmer and blurring the definition of madness and sanity as she is clearly pushed to the edge.
