Description

A gang of ruthless outlaws…a pair of larger-than-life heroes… a timeless tale of good versus evil. Blended together, the result is a sprawling, epic adventure bigger than the wild frontier — Gunfight at the O.K. Corral! Acclaimed actors Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas team up to rid Tombstone, Arizona of the murderous Clanton gang in this all-star, action-packed classic. When lawman Wyatt Earp (Lancaster) and gunfighter John "Doc" Holliday (Douglas) ride into town, they find themselves pitted against one of the biggest foes ever encountered, in the form of Ike Clanton (Lyle Bettger) and his ruthless gang. It isn't long before the confrontation explodes into a survival-at-all-costs battle, with Rhonda Fleming, Jo Van Fleet, John Ireland, Dennis Hopper, DeForest Kelley, Martin Milner and Lee Van Cleef among those swept into the drama and excitement of one of the Wild West's most legendary events!

  • For Burt & Kirk...not the history...

Tombstone is probably the most historicallly accurate of the renderings of this story. My Darlin' Clementine probably the most cinematically classic (John Ford), BUT the Burt/Kirk is the first version I ever saw and with Frankie Laine's song it's still a great film simply taken on it's own merits...if you're a fan of those three very important contributors to the film. If you want "history" go for Tombstone. But the Burt/Kirk version is for fans of that duo....and I've been one much longer than most people reading this have been alive !!

Formula: Cheesy theme song: It must be sung by Frankie Lane (Blazing Saddles), and include some whistling, and with gender-bending lyrics about a dear one (a man) dying in a gunfight. Story: Extremely corny and overdramatized, and inspired by a true story but with only 6% of it actually being true. Acting: So much ham you could open a delicatessen and with the ham being so fake that the place could be kosher. Costumes and grooming: Everyone looks like they're living in the 1950s while wearing 1880s outfits, which are typical off-the-rack Western Costume fare. In all, this is a true 1950s classic. In otherwords, highly polished bull hockey.

On my list of top five all time favorite westerns. I also enjoyed the much later Tombstone, but Lancaster and Douglas are Earp and Holliday. Jo Van Fleet is excellent as Kate, the long suffering companion of Holliday's. And of course, Frankie Laine's terrifically sung theme song is an added treat. A great film!

I would have purchased if not for the preview. 1888? Really? The gunfight at the ok corral was in 1881. Doc was dead by 1882.
