Description

A shy but ambitious film student (Honor Swinton Byrne) begins to find her voice as an artist while navigating a turbulent courtship with a charismatic but untrustworthy man (Tom Burke). She defies her protective mother (Tilda Swinton) and concerned friends as she slips deeper and deeper into an intense, emotionally fraught relationship that comes dangerously close to destroying her dreams. From acclaimed writer-director Joanna Hogg comes an enigmatic and personal portrait of the artist as a young woman, combining passionate emotions and exquisite aesthetics into a lush, dreamlike story of young adulthood and first love. At once enrapturing and mysteriously unsettling—and featuring a profoundly layered breakout performance by Honor Swinton Byrne—The Souvenir is an essential and enduring film from one of our most distinctive and exciting filmmakers.

Reviews

  • This movie is boring AF

Read AO Scotts review and thought it would be a good movie. Waste of my time. There wasn’t even a climax. At least paint eventually dries.
  • Don't. Please don't.

My partner and I patiently worked very hard for an hour to find anyone or anything to care about in this meticulously crafted spool of tedium. The critical response feels like a weird joke on the rest of us. Was it art? Sure, but there are miles of walls in art galleries plastered with boring art that doesn't take two hours to assess. I'm not a fan of most highly commercial films, but an indie film with Tilda Swinton should be at least passingly interesting. This is not. At all.

This movie eloved into dullness. The story is not even that original.
  • Unconvincing

I get someone being subdued and emotionless, but the female lead's role being so 'controlled and bland' while her partner is a roarling heroin addict that is taking advantage of her, stealing from her, and emotionally abusing her is so drastic, the juxtaposition. Was it the intention of the director to make something unconvincing? Or was the actress limited in her scope of acting?
  • Boooooring

Well what a surprise, the critics are wrong on this one. It's horrible. Like a pond in a windless, lifeless valley that supports no life nor inspires any hope of any kind. The actors are lost, awkwardly struggling through this unusual presentation, trying unsuccessfully to help it to its feet and failing miserably. Shame on me for throwing my money away. Don't make the same mistake.
