Description

Light In The Water chronicles the birth and life of West Hollywood Aquatics, the first openly gay masters swim team. From the team's founding to train for the inaugural Gay Olympic Games in 1982, through AIDS epidemic, to the wedding of two members after marriage equality passed, the team is another lens through which to study LGBTQ history in America. Through archival footage and intimate interviews with members of the team, some of whom are record setting swimmers, Light in the Water celebrates athletes that happen to be gay. Constantly returning to the theme of water, the movie examines how both joy and sorrow strengthened the team in ways that neither could do alone.

Truly a beautiful film. A story that handles intimacy and scale with such a deft hand that you find yourself wholly absorbed before you even realize it. Truly one of the most inspiring and joyful movies I've ever seen. If this doesn't make you feel all the feelings, you should update your firmware... because you might be a cyborg.

Light in the Water is an absolutely beautiful documentary through and through. The story is touching, the cinematography is stunning, and the message is inspirational. You don’t have to be an aquatics athlete or a member of the LGBTQ+ community to enjoy this film and appreciate the contributions that West Hollywood Aquatics has made to swimming and water polo, sports generally, and the LGBTQ+ community. Get ready to laugh, smile, and cry during this touching documentary.
