Description

Featuring a tour-de-force performance from Shia LaBeouf as tennis great John McEnroe, the kinetic sports thriller BORG VS. MCENROE is based on the dramatic true events behind one of the sport's most famous rivalries. At the historic 1980 Wimbledon Championships, rising American star McEnroe sets his sights on dethroning reigning champion Björn Borg, sparking an unprecedented media frenzy in the tennis world. At the center of the hype, two legendary tennis icons' with polar opposite personas and approaches to the game; McEnroe, infamous for his brash, ferocious energy on the court and his equally spectacular, expletive-fueled tantrums, versus Borg's coolly composed, elegant style of play which complements his unflappable public demeanor. However, both men are hiding deep anxieties, locked in battle with their inner demons. On the court, each athlete brings his immense talents -- and handicaps -- to bear in one of the most suspenseful events in sports history.

Reviews

  • Film with a good all-court game.

Sverrir Gudnason was born to play Borg. Importantly for a sports movie neither Gudnason nor Shia ruin the match sequences by being distractingly unathletic. The relationships are not the paint-by-numbers depictions you'd get from an American production where the audience is instructed which side to take. For me at the time the Borg vs. McEnroe rivalry was the reason I fell in love with the sport and played it competitively thereafter. One last important thing - - the Village Voice critic's review. You cannot be serious. The irony of a one-note critic mewling about the movie being a reductive critic critique is laughable, but the humor of it is obviously lost on the simpleton Alan Scherstuhl. Just a pathetic review.

I am not usually a sports fan, but as an American growing up in the 80’s, John McEnroe was an iconic part of my childhood. This character driven film is riveting and extremely well cast, well acted & superbly crafted. I felt for both athletes. Since I did not look up the plot or outcome of this match ahead of time, it was such a great nailbiter. Definitely worth the money, and I wish I had seen it in the theater. Kudos to all involved.

This was a time when tennis was at it's pinnacle and, while the film captures it, I wish the story went deeper into McEnroe's upbringing and previous success. Still, strongly recommend this watch and character dives. Good acting, nice pacing. Loved the last scene.

This is one of the best sports movies I've seen, and I've seen them all. It takes you right to the heart of the competitive edge, making you feel the pulse of the players. Often with sport films it's about the main event or the peripheral events just surrounding it. Here, we get a glimpse of their younger years, what made them into the people you see on tv. Great performances by LeBeouf and Gudnason, both going all in. Great direction, cinematography, editing, and music. Thank you to all involved for making films like this. It's been a while.

This movie is really great and if you want to really get a sense for how these two men, while brutal rivalrys, had a personal relationship that was actually refeshing to see. How we lack that in today's sports or at least it never get's talked about. Check out the HBO documentary McEnroe/Borg: Fire & Ice. It's pretty amazing that Mc opened us as much as he did. I was on the fence on how I felt about McEnroe as I grew up watching these matches for real. HBO and this movie really an inside look at the humanity of both men and monolyic pressure of professional tennis that only rarely get's talked about. rent it or buy it B vs M is worth every penny.
