Description

Egg thieves rob the nests of rare birds while a UK national police initiative named “Operation Easter” tries to stop them. The thieves are motivated not by money but by desire for the beauty of the egg and the thrill of the chase. Thousands of eggs confiscated in police raids have been found strapped under beds, beneath floorboards, and in secret rooms. With unprecedented access to the most notorious and inconspicuous perpetrators, POACHED delves into the psychology of the egg collectors as they confront their obsession.

I’ve watched a million documentaries, but few have pulled me in and taken me along for a wild and crazy ride like Poached. Hats off to Aaron Goldberg and talented team!

Poached is a sensitive, nuanced, layered portrayal of some pretty complex characters. The movie unwinds the inner conflicts of a few men living in the margins. The gentle and holistic approach toward these characters is so touching, so oddly compelling, that I found myself deeply ambivalent toward them, despite the fact that they were clearly environmental criminals with deep and abiding flaws. The film offers a fascinating glimpse into the boundary between passion and obsession, love and addiction, humor and deep sadness. And it is such fun! Egging is an obscure and bizarre, specialized “craft.” Those who elect to pursue it at all costs end up cutting very comical figures. Stylistically, the film is genius. It’s hilarious, too. And the nature shots are nothing short of breathtaking. It truly honors the landscape and the sacredness of life. I’m usually pretty tough to please, but there was not a thing about this that I did not like.

POACHED is one of the best wildlife documentaries I've ever seen, amazing. It shows how easily humans delude themselves into believing their obsessions are valid without understanding the negative effects on the species they destroy. A thrilling show. Director Timothy Wheeler is a talent to track.

A fabulous look into the quirky, fascinating world of obsessive, destructive egg collecting. Great character development to understand this odd addiction from the perspective of both the collectors and the wildlife officers. What starts as an innocent childhood pastime turns into a dangerous obsession that threatens the very existence of certain rare species. Beautiful cinematography capturing these fabulous creatures and the countryside of England.

An intriguing study of some English guys who have, or had, an ornithological fetish about stealing eggs from the nests of rare and common birds. There's plenty of high quality bird photography and video interspersed with confessional and contemplative interviews, and dialogs by folks on both the legal and illegal sides of the egg poaching story. It's a strange obsession and an interesting documentary.

This obsession of collecting bird eggs is so hard to grasp its existence yet in today society its so obviously believable. Great film, kept me interested the whole movie. The producers/directors also were very respectful of the actually people involved in this strange but true world.
