Description

There's nothing more deadly than a gentle man pushed to the breaking point! One of novelist Ernest Hemingway's greatest works comes to the screen in this story of a World War II veteran who has fallen on hard times and discovers exactly how far he will go in a desperate attempt to keep from losing his charter boat. Former PT boat captain Harry Morgan (John Garfield) now skippers a boat out of California. Deeply in debt, he agrees to smuggle Asian immigrants into the United States, but things go badly. Now, in an even more desperate situation, he agrees to ferry a gang of robbers out of the country.

This is one of the top film noirs I've seen! Lots of great character development and a great story! Garfield is great in this role as a guy trying to make it in life and getting deeper and deeper into the underworld. Patrica Neal provides a superior performance as the beatiful but hard dame who cares about nothing and no one (until she meets Garfield) Nice cinematography and here Apple provides an exceptionally nice print with adequate sound. I had never heard of this film until reviewing the films made by director Michael Curtiz (Casablanca among others.) This has the look, character development and story that are his trademarks. Highly recommended!
