I remember the day I heard that three little boys had been pulled from a creek with their arms and legs tied. And in those next months and years, I assumed that the teens who'd been charged and convicted of the crimes were guilty. Because nothing so crushingly shaming as their imprisonment (and death sentence for Echols) could happen to anyone who wasn't depraved and soulless. Then, I heard the doubts begin to be raised, and the first documentary came out. I woke up. The innocent can be convicted and there are no magically-appearing pathways that are available for them to save themselves. "Purgatory" is the last of the three documentaries that show us how certain circumstances, however uncontrollable by us, can make us vulnerable to prejudices, and we must always insist that our justice system be fair and use critical thinking when investigating crime. Don't miss it.
