I think this is as close to a perfect movie as I have ever viewed. Mastery of their craft is reflected in every scene.

This is a … MASTERPIECE of film. It is a romance …. it’s about brotherhood …. trust ….. ‘ethics. Every frame is so well pieced together. Colours … textures. The dialog is ….. brilliant. So many nuances. Gabriel Byrne is …. well …. Sit back and enjoy! #Ethics

Perhaps the finest Coen Bros film, at least arguably so, this movie has a superb cast performing at Academy levels, a terrific plot, a terrific subplot, fantastic cinematography, an incredible score - overall, a masterpiece.

I was incredibly fortunate to work on this great film as a production assistant. 26 years later and those nine months still rank as the best job I ever had. There are still a couple of scenes not in the film tho, I wonder if they'll ever put out an unabridged version?
  • The best Coen Bros film. Period.

Still my absolute favorite Coen Bros. Movie, an Irish-flavored film noir heavily inspired by Dashiell Hammer's "The Glass Key" (itself adapted into a 1942 Alan Ladd/Veronica Lake crime drama for Paramount, which features many of the same memorable lines). From the script, direction and performances to the cinematography, art direction and music, this is a perfect film beginning to end. Improves with every viewing.

I'm a Coen fan in any case, but this is one of the best gangster/mob movies ever… and what a cast! The soundtrack as well is fab. Some iconic scenes. A must view for anyone remotely interested in, well, films :))) And hats off to the two leads: Albert Finney and Gabriel Byrne… though Turturro almost steals the show.

I have viewed this film at least a dozen times and never grow tired of it. To date my favorite Coen Brothers' film. The musical score is beautiful, the acting top notch, the story well told. Definitely a keeper.

Gabriel Byrne & Albert Finny are the only real reasons to watch this film. The story goes into the surreal and you have to read between the lines a lot.

Finally, iTunes has published the greatest Gangster movie ever. Some might disagree with this description but this movie is smart and funny and engaging. This is understandable since it is a Coen Brothers' Movie. It can only be fully appreciated with multiple viewings because the plot twists are too many to describe. What a great movie!

This is an often forgotten film by the Coen brothers which is a darn shame considering how good it is. I get that it is hard to understand, but that does not mean it is boring. If you love gangster movies, then watch it and you will not be disappointed.
