Description

Quills images the final days of history's most infamous sexual adventurer, the Marquis de Sade. A nobleman with a literary flair, the Marquis lives in a madhouse where a beautiful laundry maid (Winslet) smuggles his erotic stories to a printer, defying orders from the asylum's resident priest (Phoenix). The titillating passages whip all of France into a sexual frenzy, until a fiercely conservative doctor (Caine) tries to put an end to the fun, inadvertently stoking the excitement to a fever pitch. Featuring a cast that includes Academy Award® winner Geoffrey Rush, Oscar nominee Kate Winslet, rising star Joaquin Phoenix, and Academy Award® winner Michael Caine, Quills playfully turns Sade’s story into a sexy, sinister and shattering tale he himself might have written.

  • Genius.

This was an exquisite film. Yes, some graphic scenes, but they made a point of demonstrating the suppressed sexuality and dealing with morals and inner doubts. I loved this film. Brilliant!

In college I had the great privilege of seeing this movie in Lacoste, the Marqui De Sade's summer home. I found the acting to be great, the characters well developed, the setting and scenery to be hauntingly realistic, and the general mood of the movie to be eerie and yet strangely alluring. This movie shows De Sade not as a horrible satanic figure, but as a sympathetic crusader to free speech. While his work, even by some of today's standards, is twisted and perverted, De Sade's determination to get it printed no matter what the cost is truly admirable, as well as the conflict between the priest and the forbidden love he has for a servant girl. I recommend seeing this movie now more than ever.
  • One of the Best Movies I Ever Saw!

I fell in love with this film. I actually heard about it and finally rented it. I was blown away! Geoffrey Rush was cynically delightful; Joaquin Pheonix was hot and dramatic; and Kate Winslet was practically charming! The Marquis de Sade may have been a perverted, sadistic nut job, but he was one of those who advocated the freedom of expression. So what if the movie was historically inaccurate, people should know by now that movies never follow the history books; it's for the sake of entertainment! I found the film to be romantic, sexy, bloody, tragic, yet with some dark, cyinical humor from Rush to be one of the best films of 1999 (or 2000 when it was released). I completely reccomend this film.
  • A repulsive, yet artistic endeveror

This film provides a interesting look at the victorian times and the sexual repression of that period. The film contains some graphic sex scenes as well as some nudity. Geoffrey Rush is convincing as the Marquis de sade, and his portrayl is disturbing and yet alluring at the same time. The characters in the film are all fairly believable and the acting feels genuine. There are some gross out moments, and most of the humor is adult oriented, so be aware of what to expect should you watch this film. Overall a decent period flick.

Though this film is not historically accurate it's still loosely based on the Marquis de Sade. THE MARQUIS DE SADE as in the depraved dude with satyriasis who had an INFATUATION with PERVERSITY . So I don't understand why some people gave this movie low ratings, only complaining that it was PERVERSE. Did you except bunnies in a meadow? Other than that I count this film among my favorites. Much of the dialogue is witty and entertaining, making the film easy to watch despite its dark subject. My only complaint? Jaoquin Phoenix's failed attempt at an accent.
  • Another "Goya's Ghost" or "Perfume" or "Bridges of San Luis Rey" or... ad naseum

If you liked "Perfume" then, beyond recommending counciling, I can recommend this film. If, like me, you found the film to be sick depraved trash, you'll appreciate my warning.

I bought this movie looking for a quirky romance. I was expecting it to be odd. However, this movie is repulsive, and I don't say that because its sexual. I watched the movie and there is no redeeming quality about it. It just filth mixed with gore and hypocrisy. I never write reviews and I made a point to come back. I really wish that I would have known this from the beginning. You end up hating everyone accept the main girl, and the suffering continues after the story. I am really disappointed about this film

From beginning to end this film is provocative, humorous, scandalous, and wildly entertaining with the most amazing performances from Kate Winslet, Joaquin Phoenix, and Geoffrey Rush. I do believe it was nominated for an academy award for best picture. I whole-heartedly recommend seeing it. It still stands as one of my all time favorites!!!
