Description

From Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes comes this historical drama series set during the American Gilded Age—a period of immense economic change, of huge fortunes made and lost, and the rise of disparity between old money and new money. Against this backdrop, the story begins in 1882 when young Marian Brook, the orphaned daughter of a Union general, moves into the New York City home of her thoroughly old money aunts and gets caught up in the dazzling lives of her stupendously rich neighbors. The stellar ensemble cast includes Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Louisa Jacobson, Denée Benton, Taissa Farmiga, Harry Richardson, Blake Ritson, Thomas Cocquerel, Simon Jones, Jack Gilpin, Cynthia Nixon, and Christine Baranski.

I rarely write reviews but after watching this show I had to. This isn’t my genre by any means and I can definitely say I was hooked. Give it a shot! Meryl’s daughter is Marian fyi

This is just awful. I can’t believe Julian Fellowes had anything to do with the production. Had to be for the $$$. The only redeeming performance is Christine Baranski. Otherwise this is an empty vessel.

I very much enjoyed the show. My one quibble is that in order to spend all that money, someone had to make it. We hear mention of Vanderbilt and Flagler and Rockefeller but we don't see them. We don't see the deals, inventions and innovations that produced so much wealth (okay we got Edison and electricity). I guess George Russell was intended to represent the business man of the day but with all the wealthy women coming and going in each episode, they could have tossed in a few successful men.
  • Revisionist not worth the time

High hopes for an interesting historical drama were quickly dashed in the first episode of season one. Viewers are subjected to revisionist historical inaccuracies and fantasy social constructs that simply did not exist during the period. Let us also not overlook the every show mandatory homosexual interaction that is predictable and boorish. Downton Abbey? I think not.

    Dark cinematography. Uninteresting. Struggling actors.

I really wanted to like Gilded Age. Written by Lord Fellows, American studio money to produce it, hotly anticipated. The characters are almost all without any charm despite casting some outstanding actors. The story was very hard to connect with unless you love this period of American history. There was little or no humour. And the heavy use of CGI was no substitute for a real building like Downton, where Highclere Castle was actually one of the shows characters. Ill pass on series 2.

This show is great I loved every minute and could not wait for the next episode. Me and my sister stopped everything to watch it every week. I can’t wait for the next season.
