Description

Nelly (Felicity Jones) is haunted by her past. Her memories take us back in time to follow the story of her relationship with Charles Dickens (Ralph Fiennes) with who she discovered an exciting but fragile complicity. Dickens – famous, controlling and emotionally isolated within his success – falls for Nelly. As Nelly becomes the focus of Dickens’ passion and his muse, for both of them secrecy is the price, and for Nelly a life of “invisibility”.

The movie had a slow start, but I'm glad I stuck with it, because it is a beautiful and touching film. It requires thought and attention to follow the film, but again, well worth it. I would watch it again.

Ralph Fiennes, who in my view has long been under appreciated, (going back to his lack of nomination for the "English Patient") , has shown an incredible sense of timing, vision, and one of the most penetrating studies, of a painful love affair that I have seen in its own unique way. It is austere, raw, almost cold on the exterior, but with a deep sense of humanity underneath. An astounding attention to minute details, and composed cinematography that merges the aspects of visual art, and film making. Many films of high regard, achieve this effect occasionally, however Rafe Fiennes , has been scrupulous in his demanding a disciplined and unrelenting attention to this tightly wound detail work. I feel, he has an enormous future, in this new aspect of his clearly dizzying talents. The cast is superb, every aspect of this production is spot on. ( There is something in his vision that reminds me of the best work of Satayjit Ray) My only complaint would be , that it is such a difficult story . However , I must go back to the quote with which he starts this marvelous movie. This admirable quote, sums up the entire ethos of the film, in my opinion.

What's with Hollywood making more and more movies with these older men and younger and younger women. It's becoming quite unwatchable.
