Description

Small-town banker Jack Dundee (Robin Williams) has never been able to live down the fact that he dropped an important pass during a crucial high-school football game. Likewise tainted for life is the team's star quarterback Reno Hightower (Kurt Russell), now a garage owner. Fed up with living his life under a cloud, Jack hits upon a brilliant idea: he will stage a rematch-13 years after the fact—with the members of the rival team. Trouble beckons when Jack's father-in-law announces that he's rooting for the opposition. Jack is determined to win, and in pursuit of that goal he pushes his former teammates to hitherto untapped brilliance.

This review is an excerpt from my book “Killer B’s: The 237 Best Movies On Video You’ve (Probably) Never Seen,” which is available as an ebook on iBooks. If you enjoy this review, there are 236 more like it in the book (plus a whole lot more). Check it out! THE BEST OF TIMES: It’s not about football, really. It’s about the war—or the game—between men and women. No screenwriter alive understands the jock mentality better than Shelton, and few understand women as well either. Does Jack catch the ball? Let me say this: It just doesn’t matter. The game, the play, even the original fumble, are merely focal points: catalysts for the change these lovable lethargics desperately need. And that outcome could occur in either case. This sprightly, insightful and ultimately uplifting fable about how one neurotic’s obsession can become a dream that inspires an entire town uses football as a metaphor for love, life, and spiritual redemption. Whether Jack grabs that ball or not, he grabs his own life by the balls—and by pursuing his own wacky dream, he changes the lives of everyone in Taft. And as a bonus, in the women’s dressing room scene, we get an honest answer to the question, “What do men want?”

Not sure why I like this movie so much. Just never get tired of it. A cult classic for sure. All of us have that weird ambition to hit the re-do button on a goof from our past and this is a perfect role for Robin Williams comedic talents. Had to get it on my iPhone.

It's a great sports movie with intelligent humor. Williams plays the lovable loser and Kurt Russell is the classic jock who like wine gets better with age. "Who says you can't rewrite history?" Well worth the 5.99!
