  • SHE CANNOT HIT THE HIGH NOTES!

Could not finish the movie. One of my favorite broadway soundtracks and this just ruined it. Madonna does not have the type of vocals needed for the role. She just cannot hit the notes that need to be hit. If you have ever seen Patti Lupone sing, you will understand. Should have made this years ago when Patti and Mandi could have played the parts. One more thing, Madonna cannot act.
  • Has Madonna

Madonna has always enthralled me because of her incredible versatility but this movie tops it all. I recently developed a deep interest in the life of Eva Peron and ended my quest about her life with this movie. It honestly didn't even settle with me that Madonna was who was playing Evita. She delivered on so many levels. Really, it's the performance of her lifetime. She was amazing. I truly believe Evita's spirit must've guided her throughout this film because it really captures the vulnerability of Eva.

Okay, it is an accepted fact that although Madonna's talents are many, acting isn't one of her strong suits. But her performance in Evita is enjoyable because the film plays out like the ultimate long-form music video. And Madonna established herself as the queen of music videos early on. It helps that the story of Madonna's early quest for fame and fortune mirrors that of Eva Peron's. Eva's Rainbow Tour was the original Blonde Ambition Tour. Playing this part wasn't too much of a stretch. The production values of the soundtrack are exemplary. Musically, this was a huge leap forward for Madonna and she performed these songs with seemingly newfound vocal power and conviction. Jonathan Pryce made a convincing Juan Peron, although he sometimes seemed a bit overwrought. And as for Antonio Banderas, I'll just say he seems like a nice guy and leave it at that. Is Evita a cinematic masterpiece? No. But in the spirit of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, it is a grand spectacle...Oh What A Circus! On a related note, I wish iTunes would offer the dance remixes of Don't Cry For Me Argentina, which were legendarily ridiculous and yet I love them.

Even if Madonna's previous films were questionable and somewhat ridiculous, she truly shines in Evita! Her acting and singing are top-notch, and even though the songs she performs are not exactly her type, she does a great job, and seems to be at ease playing the part.

Surprisingly good movie considering it's virtually entirely sung. Definitely the most notable Madonna film performance, although I think her performance of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" is flat and unimpressive. Some of her other performances exceed my favorite broadway versions. I agree with another review regarding the nebulous ending, but that's the nature of the way the musical is written. Must see. Must buy if you appreciate it. Madonna fan or not. So I'd rent it. If renting isn't an option, and you LIKE musicals, then you will not regret purchasing.
  • Good, but ending seemed rushed...

I just recently watched this movie in my Spanish III class because we were learning about Eva Peron. I thought it was a good movie. The songs were great. I liked how they took some of Eva's actual speeches and cooperated them into songs. "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" is one of the BEST songs in it, because it really shows how much she cared for the people of Argentina. The only flaw I thought of the movie was that the ending seemed a bit rushed. I thought they could've added Juan Peron's Inagural parade for his second term as president in it, considering that was one of Evita's last public appearances before her death the very next month. But, I can kind of see why they didn't because, due to length and how they would have a song incorperated with that. Overall, a good movie. I really give it four and a half stars. I would give it five if the ending didn't seem rushed. I would recommend this movie to anybody, especially a history buff or a person who is taking Spanish and is learning about Evita.

One of the best films ever made. Never a big fan of Madonna, but she was fabulous in this movie and was robbed when she didn't win Academy Award for it!
