Description

“12 Strong” is set in the harrowing days following 9/11 when a U.S. Special Forces team, led by their new Captain, Mitch Nelson (Hemsworth), are chosen to be the first U.S. troops sent into Afghanistan for an extremely dangerous mission. There, in the rugged mountains, they must convince Northern Alliance General Dostum (Navid Negahban) to join forces with them to fight their common adversary: the Taliban and their Al Qaeda allies. In addition to overcoming mutual distrust and a vast cultural divide, the Americans——accustomed to state-of-the-art warfare——must adopt the rudimentary tactics of the Afghan horse soldiers. But despite their uneasy bond, the new allies face overwhelming odds: outnumbered and outgunned by a ruthless enemy that does not take prisoners.

The acting was good, the idea exciting, but I found this movie surprisingly unable to hold my attention. I kept checking email, websites, played a game, all while it was running. I think it has to do with the writing. It was just story of set at a certain level of urgency and stayed there.
  • Every flick does ‘t need to be a comic book movie.

“It’s a 6 week mission.” “We’ll do it in 3 weeks.” “No one has ever flown a Chinook helicopter at 20,000 feet before.” “We’re not, we’re flying in at 25,000 feet.” And so on, and so forth, all throughout. At some point the hyperbole becomes cartoonish. It’s unnecessary. A movie like this doesn’t need Buck Rogers, Lone Ranger, Man of Steel, ol’ time Saturday afternoon matinee exaggeration better suited to hook the attention of an audience of children. Artistic license to a certain extreme risks becoming disrespectful to the movie’s real life counterparts who’s heroic actions and sacrifice are plenty captivating and inspiring, as is. There is no need to guild the lily so much in this genre. Decent movie with lots of entertainment value intended to honor American soldiers and their selfless service to country. Minus one star for the movie makers’ unnecessarily added heaping helping of cheese.

5 stars simply for the heroism and victory of the simple American soldiers chosen to go in alone to enemy territory first. The tip of the US spear. As usual, we don't hesitate. We adapt to any condition and enemy anywhere in the world. God bless the US fighters. Civilization, peace at home, depends on battles like this we never see or hear about.

One big war cliche. Terrible acting. A complete time burglar. I’m sure this story is full of many heroes, this didn’t do them justice.
